When Dorms Aren’t an Option

Beginning to attend a university or moving to a new one can be stressful in and of itself—add on trying to find living accommodations, and the stress feels more than tripled. If the dorms are filled or do not meet your budget, you may have to go looking for a flat elsewhere in the city. But by keeping your head on straight and being intentional about what you are looking for, this process can go much easier than first anticipated.

Student Accommodation

Universities are often located in big cities that have plenty of student accommodations in the area, so though you may find yourself not living on campus, you can still find a good place to stay. There are websites that have been built to give a comprehensive view of what is out there, allowing you to compare and contrast different places depending on price, offerings, and location. There may even be contact information to the landlord so that you can send a follow-up for any additional information you might need.

Location

Look for things that you know you will need in a living space. Location is one thing, but you can even live a distance away if there is a convenient bus route just outside, and this can broaden your choices. Necessities like refrigerators, washers, and furnishings are good things to look out for, but be sure that the location is free of pests, and try to find out how well the structure is built and make sure that there aren’t any leaks in case of rain.

Depending On Your Budget

Depending on the size of your purse, you may also be able to afford different things. If it is within your means, a larger space may be more ideal as well as having more appliances. If these cannot be afforded, a smaller place with just a kitchen, bed, and a working heater may be all you need. Be aware of your needs and desires when looking for a place to stay so that you can get what fits you, and so that you are not worried more about your living space than your studies.

With a level head and a clear idea of what you are looking for, finding a place to stay may not be so difficult as previously perceived. There are many student accommodations out there, so don’t be afraid of the possibilities and dive right in—you never know if you will run across exactly what you are looking for.

A friend of mine actually bought a townhouse on a college campus and rents it out to students who either don't want to or can't live in the dorms.
